English Communication Skills

Language skills in English, both academic as well as social, are essential to cope with any professional programme. In the context of technical education, besides the general competence in English like listening, speaking, reading and writing, using this knowledge for specific purposes like writing a project proposal, project reports, making presentations, facing interviews for a job, communicating with professionals and clients and so on need to be honed. It is all the more essential as proficiency in English which is closely linked with ‘communication skills' for employability.  As per the reports, Engineering graduates require a language competence of at least B1-B2 levels of Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to be successful communicators.

The English curriculum HS 101 for the beginners aims at developing such skills. The curriculum has an overall objective of developing language skills and also to make the learners develop some essential skills in self-study besides inculcating confidence in them to use English for communication. It also has an underlying objective of extending an advanced course for the Post Graduate students at a later stage of their study.

The course has an overall objective of developing language skills and also to make the learners develop some essential skills in self-study, besides inculcating confidence in them to use English for communication. It also has an underlined objective of addressing the needs of the postgraduate students who are required to hone their language skills.

Academic Writing in English

Most students struggle with writing in colleges and universities. Thus, it is crucial that they develop their academic writing skills. This course designed for English as a Second Language learners will help them in honing their essay composition skills. Students will get hands-on practice in writing for academic purposes. Furthermore, students will be introduced to basic research writing skills, including note-taking, paraphrasing, summarizing and using quotations correctly. In addition to the benefits mentioned earlier, students will be able to conduct independent research and make small surveys after completing the course.

The significance of English language skills in academic and social setting is undeniable. Additionally, the knowledge of English is one of the most sought-after skills in the private sector of the job industry. Students of IIT Guwahati need to indulge in various activities, such as interacting with their professors and fellow learners in English, participating in debates and group discussions, making presentations in English confidently etc. This course designed for the postgraduate students of the institute is aimed at helping learners acquire fluency and accuracy in speaking English as well as gain confidence to communicate in diverse situations.

IELTS Training

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English proficiency test designed for international students who wish to study, work or live in a country where English is a primary language of communication. The syllabus designed for the course is aimed at familiarising learners with the test format, improving their test-related skills for all the sections of the test: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, aside from providing them with tips and tricks to fare better in the test.  The course is open for the third and fourth year undergraduate and postgraduate students of the institute who would like to prepare for the test.

English for Employees

The ability to communicate well in English is the key to increased sustainability and career progression. With regards to office administration, aside from acquiring the four skills in English: listening, speaking, reading and writing, the ability to use this knowledge for specific purposes such as writing letters, emails, meeting minutes, reports and handling telephone calls needs to be honed.

The English for Specific Purposes course (ESP) designed for the employees of IIT Guwahati focuses on developing English language skills pertaining to their everyday working life besides equipping them with confidence to use English effectively in all walks of life.
